Tell Apple: Don’t Scan Our Phones

3 weeks 1 day ago

Apple has abandoned its once-famous commitment to security and privacy. The next version of iOS will contain software that scans users’ photos and messages. Under pressure from U.S. law enforcement, Apple has put a backdoor into their encryption system.

Sign our petition and tell Apple to stop its plan to scan our phones. Users need to speak up say this violation of our privacy is wrong.

Tell Congress: Close the Warrantless Backdoor to Spy on Communications

1 month 2 weeks ago

Repeated decisions declassified by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court confirm that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is unconstitutionally sifting through the emails and communications of U.S. persons without a warrant. This is an end-run around Americans’ privacy and it’s been going on for far too long. Now, Representatives Lofgren, Jayapal, Massie, and Davidson are offering a solution and to close this back door. The representatives will offer a vital amendment to H.R. 4505, the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for FY 2022--and we need your help to get it through.
Tell your members of Congress to support this amendment.

Tell Congress to Pass the Safe Connections Act and Make It Easier for Survivors to Escape Domestic Violence

We all know that, in the 21st century, it is difficult to lead a life without a cell phone. It is also difficult to change your number—the one all your friends, family, doctors, children’s schools, and so on—have for you. It’s especially difficult to do these things if you are trying to leave an abusive situation where your abuser is in control of your family plan and therefore has access to your phone records. Thankfully, the Safe Connections Act (S. 120) would change that.

Tell Congress: survivors of domestic violence should have an easy way to separate their phones from their abusers’ control.

Tell Your Representative to Support a More Interoperable Future

2 months 1 week ago

There are a few very large companies which have an outsized influence on our online lives. Having large companies with control over so much of our data is not working for users, not working for privacy or freedom of expression, and it’s blocking the normal flow of competition. Above all, these giants need to be pushed to make it easy for users to leave, or to use other tools to interact with their data without leaving entirely.

The “Augmenting Compatibility and Competition by Enabling Service Switching Act of 2021” (or ACCESS Act) would do that. Tell your representatives to pass the ACCESS Act.

Now is the Time. Tell Congress to Ban Federal Use of Face Recognition

2 months 2 weeks ago

At the local, state, and federal level, people across the country are urging politicians to ban the government’s use of face surveillance because it is inherently invasive and dangerous. Many U.S. cities have done so, including San Francisco and Boston. Now is our chance to end the federal government’s use of this spying technology.

Tell your Senators and Representatives they must pass Facial Recognition and Biometric Technology Moratorium Act, HR 3907/S.2052. It was recently introduced by Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), and by Representatives Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) and Rashida Tlaib (MI-13). This important bill would be a critical step to ensuring that mass surveillance systems don’t use your face to track, identify, or harm you. The bill would ban the use of face surveillance by the federal government, as well as withhold certain federal funds for local and state governments that use the technology.
